Deebo Samuel is likely on the move, and Pittsburgh could be his new spot, but his arrival wouldn’t come without Steelers general manager Omar Khan one-upping some other contestants.
According to odds posted by sportsbetting.ag, Pittsburgh has the sixth-best chances (+800) to acquire the San Francisco 49ers wide receiver in a trade. In front of the Steelers are the Washington Commanders (+300), Los Angeles Chargers (+400), Carolina Panthers (+500), Denver Broncos (+600), and New England Patriots (+700).
Samuel will be entering his seventh season as a professional, but is coming off of a lackluster showing by his standards. He totaled 51 receptions for 670 yards and three touchdowns for Kyle Shanahan and the 49ers last season. Samuel was apparently unhappy with his role in the attack, requesting a trade from the team that drafted him in the second round in 2019.
Samuel is the only player in the Super Bowl era to have 4,000 receiving yards and 1,000 rushing yards through his first five NFL seasons.
“The 49ers have granted Deebo Samuel and his agent Tory Dandy permission to find a trade partner for the wide receiver, Samuel told ESPN,” ESPN NFL insider Adam Schefter posted Sunday on X. “This comes after Samuel asked San Francisco to trade him during the players’ exit meetings after the season.”
Pittsburgh is looking to bolster its receiving corps heading into next season. That position group might be the Steelers’ most glaring need, with George Pickens being the biggest threat the team has in that regard.
The Steelers had the sixth-worst passing attack in the league in terms of yardage in 2024. Pickens paced the receivers with 900 yards on 59 grabs, while tight end Pat Freiermuth followed with 653 yards on 65 catches. No other pass-catcher had 550 yards.
