The Pittsburgh Steelers continue to make upgrades at Acrisure Stadium. According to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review’s Adam Babetski, the Pittsburgh Sports and Exhibition Authority has officially approved funding for nearly 18,000 new seats at Acrisure Stadium.

The seats approved in the latest phase are all in the lower level on the east end of Acrisure Stadium and will cost $5.8 million.

The Sports & Exhibition Authority of Pittsburgh and Allegheny County, which owns Acrisure Stadium, approved a $6.2 million expenditure last October for the first phase of replacing the seats inside it. Work has already begun replacing seats in the upper deck of the stadium, and dark gray seats are being mixed in with the customary gold ones.

85 percent of the new seats will be yellow with the other 15 percent being dark gray.

According to the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, the Steelers intend to replace over 58,700 of the stadium’s 68,400 seats by 2028, for a cost of $17.8 million. The first phase will replace 22,236 seats in the North Shore stadium over the next two years.

“As we were making changes to the seating, the sea of gold sometimes gets overwhelming,” Steelers president Art Rooney II said at the NFL owners meetings in March. “So, we did add a little black and gold in there this time around.”

Rooney added there’s no real pattern to it.

Almost all of the seats are original to the stadium, according to SEA project executive Doug Straley. The stadium opened in 2001.

SEA’s facility condition assessment firm, Stantec, found several issues with the seats over the past half-decade, including detachment from stadium concrete, rusting, broken bolts and inoperable handicap seating, Straley said in February.

Hussey Seating Company, based in Maine, will make the new seats, which come with a 10-year warranty.
