PITTSBURGH — The Pittsburgh Steelers have a coverman they can count on. It’s only a matter of time before he’s counting the figures on a new contract.

Following Monday night’s Wild Card playoff loss to the Houston Texans, Joey Porter Jr. spoke with his father and was reminded that he’ll receive a hefty payday soon enough.

“He said I made some money last night, but other than that, he said, ‘That’s the way how to end it. You felt how you felt about the Pro Bowls, about the All-Pros, and you really got to put it on TV,'” Porter said Tuesday afternoon in the locker room at the UPMC Rooney Sports Complex.

Porter was asked a few moments earlier if he would ask to be re-upped this offseason. He has one year left on his rookie deal.

“We’ll see,” Porter said.

Porter was passed over for a first-team Associated Press All-Pro nod, with the Denver Broncos’ Patrick Surtain II and Philadelphia Eagles’ Quinyon Mitchell earning the honor at cornerback instead.

“It is what it is,” Porter said. “I’m not gonna harp on it too much. The decisions were already made. If I really wanna make those types of things, I’ve just gotta work harder and make more plays out there.”

Porter isn’t campaigning for praise. He hopes his effort talks for him. Through three seasons in black and gold, he has three interceptions and 31 passes defended.

“Hopefully I don’t gotta say too much,” Porter said. “I’ve tried to really let my work on the field speak for itself, and I’m glad people are finally taking a little bit of recognition and see what I’ve been doing. But you’ve gotta keep working and I’ve gotta keep my head down.”
