The Pittsburgh Steelers have re-signed offensive lineman Steven Jones to their practice squad, the team announced on Wednesday.

The Steelers had released Jones during the final cut-down to 53 players on Tuesday. He cleared waivers on Wednesday and returned to the team’s practice squad.

Jones first joined the Steelers on a future contract in January after having spent his rookie season with the Jacksonville Jaguars.

This preseason, Jones played 19 snaps at right guard and 93 snaps at right tackle for the Steelers. In 65 total pass-block snaps, he allowed one sack and four total pressures, per PFF.

Jones started out on the Steelers’ third-team offensive line, but with Isaac Seumalo getting in very little work this offseason and Ryan McCollum and Calvin Anderson both missing extensive time with injuries, Jones quickly saw a promotion to the second string and became one of the more reliable linemen on that unit, usually serving as the right tackle opposite Dylan Cook.

Jones played left tackle, right guard and right tackle over his six-year career at Oregon and that’s what first drew the Steelers to him back in the 2024 NFL Draft process. The Steelers ended up taking Mason McCormick instead, with Jones going to Jacksonville, but he became a free agent this offseason and Pittsburgh was still interested.

In pre-draft testing, Jones measured an impressive 6-foot-5 and 342 pounds, but tested extremely poorly. His 21-inch vertical and 5.15-second shuttle run were among the worst recorded scores in the class. He had an overall 2.95 Relative Athletic Score out of 10.

Players on the practice squad are free to sign with other teams at any time. The Steelers have a maximum of 17 slots on their practice squad, which is usually filled by a combination of players the team released and cuts from other squads. The team signed 16 players on Wednesday, all of which had previously been with the team in training camp.
