The Pittsburgh Steelers have re-signed veteran running back Trey Sermon to their practice squad, the team announced on Wednesday.
Sermon has bounced on and off the Steelers roster this season. He initially started his Steelers tenure with a tryout at rookie minicamp in May. He turned that into a contract and spent all of training camp and the preseason on the Steelers’ roster.
Sermon was released during final roster cuts in August and signed to the practice squad. He played the maximum of three games as a practice squad elevation, and was signed to the active roster in order to appear in a fourth game against the Los Angeles Chargers on Nov. 9.
He played mainly on special teams, logging 47 snaps on those units, returning a pair of kicks for 51 yards. He also recorded one tackle while playing on the team’s kickoff, kickoff return, punt and punt return teams. Sermon played one snap of offense against the Indianapolis Colts in Week 9.
Following his fourth game, the Steelers waived him and re-signed him to the practice squad last month. Last week, they released Sermon from the practice squad in order to sign tackle David Sharpe.
Originally a third-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft of the San Francisco 49ers, Sermon has also spent time with the Philadelphia Eagles and Indianapolis Colts.
During a three-game stretch with Ryan Day’s Ohio State Buckeyes in 2020, Sermon rushed for 636 yards and four touchdowns. That effort included a 331-yard day against Northwestern in the Big Ten Championship game.
