Steelers’ Beanie Bishop Doubles Down on Pitt Disdain

PITTSBURGH — Those in the Pitt program may have a certain disdain for Beanie Bishop. That doesn’t seem to bother the second-year Pittsburgh Steelers defensive back and former West Virginia Mountaineers standout, who scraped his cleats on the Panthers’ logo and posted it on social media on Tuesday.

“If you go and ask them, they probably hate me,” Bishop said after Wednesday’s OTA practice at the UMPC Rooney Sports Complex. “And do I care? No, not really. That’s just part of it. If you go ask any fan in Baltimore what do they think about the Steelers, they hate us, so it is what it is. … I’m only concerned about the Pittsburgh Steeler fans or the West Virginia fans in that instance.”

Bishop was doing media on Pitt’s side of the complex, which the Steelers share with the Panthers. He said he hasn’t seen much of the response to the flame-stoking post.

“I’m not really seeing too many things,” Bishop said. “I’ve got a baking podcast. “Beanie’s Bakery” on YouTube. So that’s what I’m kind of more worried about as far as the internet goes.”

A horde of Pitt players stood outside the weight room beside the Steelers’ practice field during their Wednesday practice to heckle Bishop during 7-on-7s. A good part of the ridicule centered around Bishop’s 5-foot-9 height. One Panther called Bishop “Pee-wee.”

“You know, they always talk, especially after they beat us last year,” Bishop said. “They had a lot to say and things got quiet as the season went on. That was kind of it. I kind of looked at it as a Beanie Bishop Fan Club.”

While Beanie Bishop doesn’t like Pitt much, either, he is friends with a few former Panthers, namely M.J. Devonshire. Devonshire had an eventual game-winning pick-six in the 2022 Backyard Brawl. He’s now playing for the Carolina Panthers.

“I got some guys that I am cool with that I train with that went to Pitt,” Bishop said. “It was kind of towards them, too, a little bit. You know, they talk mess to me and I talk mess with them.”

Bishop hasn’t talked to fellow Mountaineers alum and Steelers center Zach Frazier. Beanie Bishop said, “He’ll probably give me a lot of hell and (be) like, ‘You shouldn’t do it.’ He’s more reserved.”
