Even though the Pittsburgh Steelers currently face some depth uncertainty on the interior of the defensive line, nose tackle Domenique Davis was included as part of the team’s roster trim-down on Tuesday.
Davis, 29, spent the offseason with the Steelers, but was released last month when the team brought in safety Chuck Clark. Davis was re-signed a few days later. Clark was also cut on Tuesday, but could return to the team soon, depending on whether rookie quarterback Will Howard or Donte Kent is placed on injured reserve.
Davis, who stands 6-foot-2 and weighs 326 pounds, initially joined the Steelers last November, spending a month on the practice squad after the Cincinnati Bengals let him go. He never saw any game action with the Steelers.
After finishing out last season with the Bengals, he chose Pittsburgh as a free agent this offseason, expressing his desire to play as a nose tackle in a 3-4 scheme.
“It’s definitely built for me,” he said this spring. “I played under Tim Lewis before in the USFL. I already know it suits my talents better.”
Davis went undrafted in 2020 after a college career at Division II UNC-Pembroke. He signed with the New York Jets, but was let go after failing a physical. Davis fought to resuscitate his career with the USFL’s Houston Gamblers, posting 24 tackles and four sacks in 2022.
Keeanu Benton, the Steelers’ 2023 second-round draft pick, appears to be nursing a left elbow injury. Rookie first-round choice Derrick Harmon could be out for around a month with a sprained MCL, which is better news than the team could’ve gotten after he was carted off the field in Carolina.
