Outside linebacker Nick Herbig is questionable with a hamstring injury suffered in the preseason. Quarterback Skylar Thompson is questionable with a hamstring injury suffered in practice this week. Defensive lineman Derrick Harmon is out with a knee sprain.
The Steelers elevated cornerback James Pierre from the practice squad.
It did not start out the dynamic passing exhibition that may have been hoped for, but Russell Wilson and the Pittsburgh Steelers offense roared into life late, scoring 31 unanswered points in a 37-15 win over the New York Jets in Wilson’s first action with the team.
Wilson made his first start of the 2024 season after missing the first six games of the campaign while rehabbing a right calf injury. Wilson first injured his leg pushing a sled on the first day of training camp, returned after a month off, and then re-injured it in the week of practice leading up to the season opener.
The 35-year-old did not use his legs much, but his arm — and a couple of huge interceptions by rookie cornerback Beanie Bishop — did enough to give the Steelers the win.
The Steelers are 21-7 all-time against the Jets, but have lost three of the five four games. The Steelers crushed the Jets in Pittsburgh last fall. Before that, they lost in the Meadowlands in 2019, 16-10 and in 2014, 20-13.
The Steelers are 10-5 against the Jets in New York, but have lost four of the last five in the Meadowlands. They are 1-2 against the Jets at MetLife Stadium since in opened in 2010.
Pittsburgh won the first nine matchups in the series from 1970-86 and lost just once in the first 15 games between the teams. It’s been more competitive since then, with the clubs basically splitting the regular-season games since 2000.
Quarterback Justin Fields spent the 2024 season with the Steelers.
Defensive end Rashad Weaver, who is on the Jets’ injured reserve list, went to Pitt. Tackle Olu Fashanu went to Penn State. Tight end Mason Taylor is the son of Jason Taylor, the former Miami Dolphins linebacker and a Woodland Hills product.
Linebackers coach Aaron Curry spent the 2023 and 2024 seasons with the Steelers.
