The Pittsburgh Steelers have signed tight end Kevin Foelsch, the team announced on Tuesday. Foelsch was one of five players to work out for the team on Monday.

Foelsch, 24, was most recently a member of the Kansas City Chiefs, who signed him on June 11 of this season and released him on June 20.

The 6-foot-4, 250-pound tight end spent most of the 2024 season on the Philadelphia Eagles practice squad, without playing in game. The Eagles had claimed him off waivers from the New York Jets. Foelsch had first signed with the Carolina Panthers, but was released almost immediately. A rookie camp tryout with the Jets earned him a contract.

Foelsch spent five seasons at Division-II New Haven, where he caught 32 passes for 318 yards and seven touchdowns as a senior in 2023. He was a three-year starter and a three-time all-conference selection. Foelsch was the first former Chargers player to sign an NFL contract since 2017.

The Steelers are lacking depth at tight end after rookie undrafted free agent DJ Thomas-Jones suffered an injury in practice on Sunday. Initially feared to be a season-ending Achilles injury, Thomas-Jones got good news after an MRI on Monday, but still could miss significant time.

Foelsch will compete with another Steelers UDFA, JJ Galbreath out of South Dakota, for playing time on the third team, behind starters Pat Freiermuth and Jonnu Smith and top backups Darnell Washington and Connor Heyward.

In addition to signing Foelsch, the Steelers also waived wide receiver Montana Lemonious-Craig and outside linebacker Jeremiah Moon with an injury designations, made official the release of running back and kick returner Cordarrelle Patterson, and signed defensive tackle Domenique Davis and running back Lew Nichols III.
