UNITY TWP, Pa. — With its new pieces and even reserves, the Pittsburgh Steelers’ defense was firing on all cylinders as things got physical last week. Another handful of training camp practices have allowed Aaron Rodgers and the offense to catch up.

Rodgers, a four-time Associated Press NFL MVP, feels the Steelers’ attack has made strides recently, following a trend he’s picked up on throughout his 21-year pro career.

“I think we’ve been clicking the last three or four days much better,” Rodgers said Wednesday. “Our defense, obviously, we added a lot of pieces to it. Always early in camp when the pads go on, the defense seems to have the upper edge and then the second week it starts to turn a little bit.”

The daily opposition at St. Vincent College has made the offense look ordinary at points throughout training camp. DK Metcalf, who figures to be Rodgers’ main target this upcoming season after the Steelers traded for him and paid him handsomely, has seen enough to believe the defense could be great.

Going up against the likes of Joey Porter Jr., Darius Slay and Jalen Ramsey, the standout receiver had high praise for his new team’s resistance earlier this week.

“I think they’re the best defense I’ve ever seen,” Metcalf said during a recent interview with NFL Network’s Steve Smith and Ian Rapoport.

On Tuesday, Rodgers and his unit dominated in seven shots to begin practice. Rodgers hit Roman Wilson during that period, a sign that the second-year receiver — who missed essentially all of his rookie go-round — is building a rapport with the 41-year-old veteran.
