PITTSBURGH — Dealing with a pectoral issue, outside linebacker Alex Highsmith leads the Pittsburgh Steelers’ inactives for Sunday’s rematch with the Cincinnati Bengals. The others on that list are cornerback Darius Slay (concussion), inside linebacker Cole Holcomb (illness), defensive lineman Logan Lee, defensive tackle Brodric Martin-Rhodes and offensive lineman Andrus Peat. Will Howard will be Mike Tomlin’s emergency third quarterback.
Highsmith suffered the injury against the Los Angeles Chargers last week. Highsmith played 72.6% of the Steelers’ defensive snaps against the Bolts. He said earlier in the week that he was optimistic, but wound up not being ready to go against Joe Flacco and the rest of the Bengals’ offense.
Highsmith dealt with an ankle injury earlier this season. In his last two games, he’d registered four sacks and a forced fumble. Nick Herbig will work in Highsmith’s place, with rookie Jack Sawyer sliding into the No. 3 outside linebacker spot.
James Pierre will help fill in for Slay, who had his bell rung while trying to make a tackle against the Chargers. The Steelers also signed coverman Asante Samuel Jr., but he remains on the practice squad for the matchup.
Lee hasn’t appeared in a game for the Steelers since Week 3.
