After missing the postseason last year for the first time since 2014, it’s a big year for the Kansas City Chiefs. They’ll need all hands on deck and everyone staying on task.
Unfortunately, now there’s a huge distraction that is sure to take some of the coaching staff’s attention away after a serious incident occurred late Sunday night.
According to ESPN, the wife of Chiefs offensive coordinator Eric Bieniemy has been shot. Bieniemy’s 27-year-old son, Elijah, has been arrested as the leading suspect.
Elijah has been charged with malicious wounding, use of a firearm in commission of a felony, plus discharge of a firearm inside a dwelling. He is being held without bond in Loudoun County, Virginia, where the incident took place.
As for Eric’s wife, Mia, the 57-year-old is in stable condition but is currently hospitalized. Police initially were willing to confirm that an unidentified person was being treated for “serious injuries” relating to “multiple gunshot wounds,” but they were not willing to reveal the person’s identity.
The shooting allegedly happened roughly just before 7:32 p.m. on Sunday night, when dispatchers were called to the scene.
The Chiefs’ organization has since released a statement, indicating they are “aware” of the incident involving the family of their offensive coordinator, but no further details have been released.
Though Eric was in attendance at Chiefs camp on Sunday in Missouri, he was not in attendance for Monday’s practice and has since left the facilities.
