Turf Show Times
The home of the Los Angeles Rams, SoFi Stadium, is drawing high praise and shining on the FIFA World Cup stage. During the event the venue will be referred to as Los Angeles Stadium.
SoFi will host eight matches in the coming weeks including a quarterfinals game on July 10th. The United States defeated Paraguay 4-1 last Friday in Los Angeles.
Kevin Demoff, president of both the Rams and Kroenke Sports and Entertainment, took to social media platform X and explained that hosting the World Cup and the most significant stages in sports was owner Stan Kroenke’s dream when he relocated the team from St. Louis and constructed SoFi Stadium:
When Stan Kroenke dreamed of building the world’s greatest stadium and making LA the entertainment AND sports capital of the world, it was with nights like this (last Friday) & U-S-A chants in mind.
One of the sticking points of hosting the World Cup among the NFL community is stadiums that usually have turf fields instead installed natural grass. This temporary shift raises concerns regarding player safety. If these stadiums can use grass for FIFA, why can’t NFL franchises maintain these fields longer term with the best interests of their players in mind?
According to a report by SI’s Albert Breer, SoFi Stadium could potentially have a full-time grass field if the Rams were the only team that called it home. The venue is currently shared by both the Rams and Los Angeles Chargers, and crew often must convert the painted turf from one team to the next on short notice. Hosting two teams also causes additional wear and tear that could tilt the scales in favor of an artificial surface.
This is a report that is worth keeping in mind. The Rams seem to be spreading roots in Los Angeles while the Chargers haven’t exactly been embraced by the community in the same fashion. If one day the Chargers again relocate, SoFi Stadium could convert to a natural grass surface long term.
Fans from across the world expressed awe at the atmosphere inside of SoFi Stadium:
