Vice President and Director of Athletics DeWayne Peevy and head men’s soccer coach Mark Plotkin also made a joint statement, noting how heartbroken they were by the loss. They described Chase Stegall as a “dedicated teammate and kind-hearted friend.”
“His loss will be deeply felt across our entire Athletics and university family and his memory will forever be a part of DePaul University,” they added.
Chase was only 20.
He is survived by his parents, Milton and Darlene Stegal, and brother Collin. Milton had stints with the Cincinnati Bengals, Green Bay Packers, and New Orleans Saints in the early 90s.
Chase played in 16 of DePaul’s 17 games last season.
The CFL’s Winnipeg Blue Bombers, where his father was a star, also released a statement, referring to Chase as a bright and talented player with a promising future, adding that “his loss is felt deeply across our entire Blue Bombers family.”
“Our hearts go out to Milt, Darlene, and the entire Stegall family during this unimaginable time. We mourn with them and extend our deepest condolences, love, and support,” their post reads.
Chase Stegal’s cause of death is unknown or at least hasn’t been made public at this time.
DePaul University will share details on a memorial service soon.
TPS sympathizes with the Stegal family, as well as Chase’s friends, teammates, and loved ones.
May he rest in peace.
