The Las Vegas Raiders are low on depth at the safety position. After the loss of Lonnie Johnson Jr. to injury, the team has left a hole at the position. A sign of this was Chris Smith II playing 45 snaps and Trey Taylor playing 30 snaps after the first preseason game.
It was inevitable for the Raiders to hit the free agent market and sign a new safety to help the defense. The Raiders did that on Sunday when they signed veteran safety Terrell Edmunds to help fill the defensive back room.
The 6-1, 217-pound safety initially entered the league as a first-round selection by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 2018 NFL Draft, where he spent the first five seasons of his career.
Last season, Edmunds played for the Jacksonville Jaguars and Pittsburgh Steelers. He played in five games for the Steelers and now has a chance to get a rotational role with the Silver and Black defense. It is not a groundbreaking move, but it should help fill the roster that has a hole at safety.
