The Las Vegas Raiders drafted Fernando Mendoza number one overall to become the potential franchise quarterback. His hype continues to build after he finally signed his rookie contract and is in the building for training camp.
Mendoza isn’t expected to play right away, with the coaching staff not wanting to rush him onto the field. That’s why the team signed Kirk Cousins this offseason to become the spot starter for the Silver and Black. This will allow Mendoza to learn and get accustomed to life in the NFL.
Most of Raider Nation is expecting somewhat of a competition at the position. However, Mendoza was interviewed on the Upon Further Review podcast and believes they are competing with each other and not as rivals.
“Being a part of the Silver and Black, we want to compete every single day and do the best that we can for the organization and best for the team so we can win games, Everybody in the quarterback room is a top-tier quarterback and it’s going to be competing with each other, not competing against each other.”
This is a great mindset for Mendoza to have as it creates less pressure on himself to win the job. He can go out and sling it knowing that he was going to be coached up and allows Cousins to be a mentor without having to be fully engaged in correcting him.
