The Las Vegas Raiders had their first preseason game of the year on Thursday. The 23-23 tie didn’t satisfy the fan base when it came to performance, but it kept the team from having their first loss of the preseason.
While the Raiders did find a way to tie the game late in the fourth quarter, it wasn’t clean for most of the performance. On defense, the Raiders tallied 13 missed tackles according to PFF.com, which is ugly for a team that plays zone and depends on tackling well.
Raiders head coach Pete Carroll wasn’t a fan of the play on the field and believed it was due to the first preseason game. It has been a problem for Carroll with his Seattle teams struggling to make tackles during his last two seasons as a head coach. Carroll is emphasizing the defense to clean it up.
“Well, yeah, I’m chalking it up to it’s the first preseason game. And I’m concerned, yeah.
That way we tackled stunk. And it was all open field stuff for the most part, and that’s the first time we’ve
tackled anybody. So, that’s why you play these games. Progress was made in the second half; we were
playing a lot cleaner and guys just got used to running and hitting. But we need to continue to emphasize
it like we have been, but that’s the first shot. It could have been better. I thought we worked on it hard
enough to show better than that, but we’ve got work to do.”
It is for sure an item the Raiders need to clean up before the regular season. Tackling has been an issue for the Raiders for years, and they don’t want to continue this ugly trend. Hopefully, Raider Nation sees better results on the field when it comes to tackling against the San Francisco 49ers.
