One of the nice things about the Eagles winning the Super Bowl, and pushing their season into mid-February, is that we’ve been able to ignore the vast majority of the Sixers’ and Flyers’ seasons.
It’s not like there’s been much to write about anyway. The Flyers are in year 2 of a two-year rebuild that may actually be a three-year rebuild. That depends on what Danny Briere does in the offseason. And the Sixers are undergoing an injury-riddled husk of a campaign in which it seems the level of effort and care varies among the individuals involved.
Thing is, no one cared about the NBA regular season to begin with. We’ve been in “wake me up when the playoffs start” mode with the Sixers for several years now. So there wasn’t going to be a lot of Sixers talk during the Eagles season anyway, even if the Birds didn’t go on this run. And the Flyers were supposed to embark upon a “look for positive signs but don’t expect wins” type of campaign, which meant more justified eyeballs during the winter months, but nothing critical.
Which begs the question – should we just skip the NBA and NHL seasons entirely? The Phillies already reported and it’s currently February 18th. The first preseason game is Saturday and the opener is on March 27th. The calendar could potentially look something like this:
I think we can do it. There’s going to be plenty of NFL and MLB stuff to get us through six weeks, then the Phillies season begins and the NBA and NHL will be done before the draft, assuming the Sixers miss the playoffs. And if they do miraculously turn it around, then it just goes back to what we’ve said from the beginning. Wake us up when the playoffs start.
And once we hit the end of the Flyers season, they’ll clear out the dead cap from Tony DeAngelo and Cal Petersen. They’ll be one year closer to getting off the Kevin Hayes and Cam Atkinson hits and free up $5 million in expiring money from the Joel Farabee and Morgan Frost trade. There will be...
