The Broncos are 5-2, have won four straight games, and are coming off a historic comeback victory vs. the New York Giants. Now, with the NFL trade deadline just two weeks away, some believe the Broncos should be active buyers.
Mike Florio of Pro Football Talk and Chris Simms of NBC Sports believe the Broncos should be active in the trade market and look to improve their offense by trading for another wide receiver.
Courtland Sutton is the Broncos’ unquestioned number one wide receiver and Bo Nix’s most trusted target. You have a key third down or need a big play? Nix finds Sutton, and more often than not, he makes the play. However, after Sutton, the Broncos’ other playmakers have been adequate at best.
Marvin Mims remains a solid gadget/down the field/jet sweep/screen player for the Broncos offense, but has not shown enough to be a solid number thus far. Through 7 games, Mims has 22 receptions for 234 yards and 1 touchdown, as well as 4 carries for 36 yards and 1 additional touchdown. He’s a solid role player who usually plays about 40 or 50% of the snaps a game, but is not exactly a trusted number two option in the offense.
Troy Franklin has seen his role grow in the offense and operates as their number two wide receiver. Through 7 games, he has 27 receptions for 269 yards and 2 touchdowns. He has had his moments, but also has had some drops and has been adequate at best in that role.
Both are young players who should continue to develop and improve as the season progresses, but the Broncos need another trusted weapon. If god forbid, Courtland Sutton were to go down, the Broncos offense would be in trouble. That’s why I would be in favor of adding another weapon if the price is right.
Some names that are potentially on the market include Raiders wide receiver Jakobi Myers, Saints speedster Rashid Shaheed, as well as bigger names such as Chris Olave or maybe even Jaylen Waddle. It remains to be seen if one or any of these receivers will be moved, especially Olave and Waddle, but they are the names being thrown around right now.
Now, would the Broncos make a big splash trade for a receiver at the deadline? I have my doubts. They do have an extra 4th round pick and could receive compensatory picks if defensive coordinator Vance Joseph lands a head coaching job this offseason. So, they could potentially have ammo to work with. However, Head Coach Sean Payton seems to believe in his young receivers and has rookie Pat Bryant receiving plenty of snaps as well. So, while I would be very open to adding an established receiver to this offense, I do not think it’s realistic, but I could be wrong.
So, I ask you, Broncos Country. Do you believe the Broncos should trade for a wide receiver and go “all in” on 2025, or do you believe...
