Signs are pointing to Nussmeier coming to New Orleans next season.
With the head coaching hire complete, the New Orleans Saints should now look to hire their next defensive and offensive coordinators. Doug Nussmeier, the current quarterbacks coach in Philadelphia, appears to be the front-runner for the OC position.
A former quarterback himself, Nussmeier was drafted by the Saints in the fourth round of the 1994 NFL draft. After four seasons in New Orleans, he spent the next few years bouncing around the league before joining the CFL’s BC Lions in 2000 and winning the Grey Cup. Similar to how Moore got into coaching, the Lions would ask him to be their QB coach after retirement.
Nussmeier hasn’t spent too long in one spot as a coach. He spent the 2001 season as the QB coach in British Columbia, and in ‘02 he would hold the same position with the Ottawa Renegades. His return to American football wouldn't be until 2003, when he was hired by Michigan St. as their QB coach. After East Lansing, Nussmeier would have a brief stint in the NFL as the QB coach for the St. Louis Rams before jumping back to college football.
From 2008 to 2017, he would coach at five schools as the offensive coordinator/QB coach: Fresno St., Washington, Alabama, Michigan, and Florida. At Alabama, Nussmeier would earn a CFP Championship in 2012.
By winning a CFP championship, the Grey Cup, and the Super Bowl, he has secured a place in an exclusive club. I wasn’t even able to find a list of people who have managed to achieve that, so he might be all by himself there.
Nussmeier returned to the NFL in 2018, taking over as tight end coach for the Dallas Cowboys. And when Kellen Moore was promoted to be the Cowboy’s OC, he would fill the role of QB coach once again.
Seemingly attached at the hip, Nussmeier followed Moore to Los Angeles when the latter accepted the OC job for the Chargers. Holding the same position as he did in Dallas, Nussmeier would coach the QBs. When Brandon Staley, the head coach for the Chargers, was let go in 2023, Nussmeier would once again follow Moore, this time to Philly.
Now, with Moore having accepted the job in New Orleans, all signs are pointing to Nussmeier following him to the Crescent City.
Because of Nussmeier’s football coaching experience, I decided to make a list of the notable QB’s he coached.
