Should DK Metcalf Regret Overlooking Patriots Over Steelers?

DK Metcalf had zero interest in joining the New England Patriots this offseason.

Instead, the two-time Pro Bowl wide receiver joined the Pittsburgh Steelers via a trade from the Seattle Seahawks. Metcalf claimed a landing spot with desirable weather conditions and a playoff environment were the two main priorities, although Pittsburgh isn’t a guarantee to provide Metcalf either of those. The Steelers don’t have a clear-cut starting quarterback yet, the city’s weather isn’t anything to write home about, and the team just collapsed in the AFC wild-card game last season against the Baltimore Ravens.

So… should Metcalf have given Foxborough deeper consideration?

“That was a big one,” George Balekji said on NESN’s “Foxbro Rush” podcast. “Why would you not trade for him? You have more money, you got a better draft pick, but — and honestly, good luck to DK Metcalf. He could’ve had a Drake Maye. Instead, he has who knows with the Steelers. Because think of all this talk too. Jameis Winston ending up on the (New York) Giants. The (Cleveland) Browns are like, ‘Fine, go ahead. We’ll let you go. $4 million, go ahead.’ The Steelers let Justin Fields go to the (New York) Jets and the Steelers (let) Russell Wilson do whatever the hell he (wanted to).”

Metcalf made 15 appearances last season with the Seahawks and totaled 992 receiving yards off 66 receptions with five touchdowns. New England might’ve added Metcalf to its long list of missed wideout targets, however, the franchise didn’t come up empty. The Patriots signed Stefon Diggs to a three-year, $69 million contract on Tuesday, giving Maye a notable upgrade entering his sophomore season.
