Not everyone is so high on the Pittsburgh Steelers’ new weapon on offense.
The Pittsburgh Steelers’ biggest acquisition of the offseason may just turn out to be a dud, at least that’s what some around the league seem to believe.
Joe Tansey of Bleacher Report tabs Steelers wide receiver DK Metcalf as a bust candidate for the 2025 season.
“There’s reason to be concerned about DK Metcalf’s production because of his quarterback. Aaron Rodgers is no longer the 4,000-yard quarterback he was for most of his career. He may struggle to find Metcalf at times,” Tansey wrote. “Metcalf has another issue at hand at being the only notable wide out on the Steelers depth chart after the George Pickens trade. Opposing defenses will double up on Metcalf and let Calvin Austin III and Robert Woods try to beat them.”
Pittsburgh paid a hefty price tag to acquire Metcalf this offseason, trading its second-round pick in the 2025 NFL Draft and then giving him a new five-year, $150 million contract. So the team is certainly hoping he doesn’t turn out to be a bust on the field.
However, the 27-year-old hasn’t through the first six seasons of his NFL career, recording at least 900 receiving yards and five touchdowns every year.
The Steelers are still doing everything they can to help out Metcalf, too. They already added Pro Bowl tight end Jonnu Smith into the mix, giving opposing defenses yet another player to account for. It’s safe to say adding another wide receiver is also still on the table.
Pittsburgh’s options are running out, but the next best time to go shopping will be cutdown day when teams around the league trim their rosters from 90 down to 53.
Since being drafted in the second round (No. 64 overall) of the 2019 NFL Draft, Metcalf has registered 438 receptions for 6,324 yards and 48 touchdowns.
