Indianapolis Colts running back Salvon Ahmed has received the worst possible news ahead of the 2025 NFL season, as he is expected to miss all of it after suffering an injury in practice.
Ahmed was the victim of a hip-drop tackle from teammate Trey Washington last week, which resulted in hospitalization.
He has since been ruled out for the entire 2025 season with an ankle injury, and his career is now thought to be at risk.
“Never want to see that happen,” Colts head coach Shane Steichen said, per ESPN’s Stephen Holder. “I know we don’t encourage hip-drop tackles.
He added:
“I know Trey’s down in the dumps, and I don’t think he’s trying to do that. We’re just trying to create an edge. … Those [backups] are going to have to tackle come preseason.”
The hip-drop tackle is described as one from a defensive player who “unweights himself by swiveling and dropping his hips and/or lower body, landing on and trapping the runner’s leg(s) at or below the knee.”
It was banned by the league before the 2024 season, with the owners agreeing to implement a 15-yard penalty. Sadly, its use in practice has resulted in Salvon Ahmed suffering a potential career-ending injury.
Salvon Ahmed was already faced with the tough task of making it in the NFL as an undrafted running back, even as a backup, and was on his fourth team in six seasons.
He’s now 26, which is around the point where running backs begin to slow down, so the injury could indeed end his career as he will have a difficult time landing on a team after dealing with such a serious injury.
Of course, we hope that isn’t the case and wish him the best.
