Shilo Sanders wanted to give his father a special piece of family memorabilia after his NFL preseason debut on Saturday, but the Pro Football Hall of Famer turned it down.
The 25-year-old Shilo Sanders signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as an undrafted free agent. Sanders is competing for one of the Bucs’ safety jobs, and he got the chance to make an early impression in Saturday’s preseason opener against the Tennessee Titans.
Sanders had one tackle and a quarterback hit in the Bucs’ 29-7 victory. This came one day after younger brother, Cleveland Browns QB Shedeur Sanders, delivered a strong outing and 2-touchdown performance against the Carolina Panthers in his preseason debut.
Speaking to reporters after the game, Shilo Sanders revealed that he offered Deion the very jersey he wore in his preseason debut. Coach Prime didn’t want it, however, so Shilo plans to give it to his mother instead.
“He didn’t want it,” Shilo said. “You know he’s a Hall of Famer. He expects like 30 times more. I’m gonna give it to my mom though…I gotta get like three picks for him to want it.”
Shilo Sanders joked that he’s not gifting his first NFL jersey to his dad on his birthday because “he doesn’t want it (laughs). You know he’s a Hall of Famer. He expects like 30 times more. At least Deion is trying to keep his son focused and locked in as he attempts to win one of the Bucs’ 53-man roster spots.
Shilo and the Buccaneers will continue their preseason action next Saturday when they travel to Pittsburgh to take on the Steelers (7:00 p.m. EST). After that, they’ll wrap up the preseason with a home tilt against the Buffalo Bills on Aug. 23.
