Shedeur Sanders is not yet over his shocking freefall in the 2025 NFL Draft. Sanders, at one point considered a potential No. 1 overall pick in April’s draft, had to wait all the way until round five to hear his name called in Green Bay, and he says his father Deion is to blame.
Sanders, who is already working to embed himself in the Cleveland community, spent a morning at John Marshall High School recently, where he said his game and star power appeal to a younger generation. He also gave an interview to Cleveland.com where he went in-depth about the draft tumble and what he feels precipitated it.
“They don’t care about other people’s opinion of you,” Sanders said of why he enjoyed spending time at the school. “They go based off their own — 99% of hatred [directed at me] is toward pops. And then I’m just his son. But [the kids] didn’t grow up in an era to where they watched him play. It’s just the older generation that does it to me rather than the younger people. Because when I come in person, there’s no negativity I see. But it’s all over online.
“So, that’s why I say I like going [to schools] in person and actually meeting them, and any questions they have, I say, ‘Just ask me whatever question you want. Pick any question. No filter, no anything.’ That’s what they say. And then I just answer whatever they need me to answer.”
Sanders makes a fair point. He’s never going to escape Deion Sanders’ son. But he and his father have also done everything possible to tie themselves to one another. After all, Shedeur Sanders has never had a head coach other than his father up until now. So it feels a bit funny that he’s now blaming others for associating the two with one another.
But there’s certainly a great chance that if Sanders didn’t have that association that he would have had a higher floor when it comes to his NFL Draft stock.
