Shedeur Sanders has admitted that the fact that he is the son of Deion Sanders is to blame for his slide in the NFL Draft.

The quarterback, who played for his father for two years at Colorado, has stepped out from under his wing, as he’s now in the NFL. But the journey from college to the pros, while short, was painstaking.

Sanders was a projected first-round pick but slid all the way to the fifth round, where he was eventually selected by the Cleveland Browns. He will now have to work five times as hard to stay in the league, given his prospects of starting.

An outing at John Marshall High School saw him give an interview to Cleveland.com, during which he spoke about his fall in the draft.

Shedeur, who was at the school to speak to students, claimed most of the hate he gets is actually directed at his father, which is why he fell so far.

“They go based off their own — 99% of hatred [directed at me] is toward pops,” he said. “And then I’m just his son.”

Shedeur Sanders Says The Older Generation’s Full Of Haters

Shedeur added that he doesn’t struggle getting through to young people, given that they didn’t see his father play, suggesting the hate comes from the older folks.

“But [the kids] didn’t grow up in an era where they watched him play. It’s just the older generation that does it to me rather than the younger people,” he continued. “Because when I come in person, there’s no negativity I see. But it’s all over online.”

Shedeur Sanders will have an opportunity to prove he can be his own man in the NFL, having played for his father all his life. It will be difficult for people to see him as Shedeur and not a Sanders because of his dad’s looming shadow.

As for his draft slip, we’ll never know how things would have turned out had someone else been his father.
