At times, even when your dad is Deion Sanders, you’ve got to say no, even if it sucks. Shedeur Sanders, rookie quarterback for the Cleveland Browns, recently told his dad not to visit him at training camp. This wasn’t some spoiled NFL kid moment. It came from a place of maturity, focus, and pride.

While Coach Prime has made the rounds, including a stop in Tampa to see his other son, Shilo, with the Buccaneers, he hasn’t headed to Cleveland. And that’s exactly how Shedeur wanted it.

“He didn’t want me to come,” Deion told Michael Irvin. “He was like, ‘Dad, I may get three, four reps in practice. I don’t want you seeing that. No, I’m not where I want to be.’”

Shedeur Sanders Isn’t Looking For Sympathy

Shedeur Sanders was picked in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft. He’s in a crowded quarterback room with Joe Flacco, Dillon Gabriel, and Kenny Pickett, who’s currently dealing with a hamstring injury. According to ESPN’s Daniel Oyefusi, Sanders is sitting at QB4 for now and hasn’t taken any first-team reps.

But he isn’t stressing about it. Not even close.

“He’s like, I got work to do but I’m going to put in this work,” Deion mentioned. “One thing, they’re going to have to let me play. Preseason is going to come. When preseason comes, watch me work.”

The 22-year-old clearly understands where he stands, but he’s not sulking in the corner. Instead, he’s focused on putting in the grind, even if it means asking his legendary father to keep his distance while he works through the tough early days.

“I don’t think that’s my place to answer,” Shedeur Sanders said when asked about the lack of reps. “It’s not in my control, so I’m not going to think about that.”

He’s choosing gratitude over frustration. “There’s a lot of people who want the opportunity to be at this level, and I’m here.”

And he’s not letting the depth chart shake his confidence. “It doesn’t make me feel down or left out,” he said. “I know who I am as a person. I know what I could bring to this team.”

Deion might be a Hall of Famer and a college football icon. But in this case, he’s just a dad, respecting his son’s space as Shedeur works to earn his shot in the NFL.
