Cleveland Browns rookie Shedeur Sanders reportedly exited today’s training with an oblique injury and did not return.
The Browns are scheduled for a joint practice with the Philadelphia Eagles, the defending Super Bowl champions, this Wednesday ahead of their preseason clash on Saturday.
According to ESPN insider Adam Schefter, the quarterback was throwing in the early portion of practice when he got hurt. Schefter noted that the former Colorado Buffaloes star was kept out for the remainder of the session.
“Browns QB Shedeur Sanders suffered an oblique injury while throwing during the early portion of practice today, and was held out for the rest of the session,” he shared via X.
The 23-year-old started for Cleveland against the Carolina Panthers on Friday and helped them to a 30-10 preseason-opening win. He threw for 138 yards and two touchdowns on 14-of-23 passing. He also made four carries for 19 yards on the ground.
Head coach Kevin Stefanski revealed the 23-year-old would be starting earlier in the week despite him being the last QB on the team’s unofficial depth chart in the buildup to the opener.
The latest chart also lists him at fourth, while this latest injury setback could be costly.
Shedeur Sanders slipped all the way to the fifth round and was selected by the Browns at No. 144 overall in April’s NFL Draft following promising projections. The 2024 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award winner was touted as a top-five pick ahead of the draft but has found himself in a risky position following his day-three selection.
His father, Deion Sanders, suggested he would dictate where his sons, Shedeur and Shilo, went to, teasing that the family would follow the Manning model.
“I know where I want them to go,” Coach Prime said. “There’s certain cities where it ain’t going to happen … It’s going to be an Eli. We ain’t doing that.”
Sanders is now fighting for his place.
