Shedeur Sanders does not want his father, Deion Sanders, to come visit him at training camp ahead of his rookie season.
The former Colorado quarterback was his dad’s main man in Boulder over the past two seasons and entered the NFL Draft with high expectations. However, things did not go according to plan.
The younger Sanders slipped out of the first round and didn’t stop until the Cleveland Browns selected him in the fifth. And even they picked another QB two rounds ahead of him, selecting Dillon Gabriel in round 3 before making him the 144th overall pick.
Despite the shocking turn of events, the rookie will have an opportunity to stamp his influence on team proceedings and, by virtue of that, the NFL. But he doesn’t want his father to be around while he tries to accomplish his goals, at least not until he’s climbed up the pecking order.
“I look at it from my own point of view, I don’t want him coming to see me right now, because I want to get to where I want to go and then for him to see me” the 2024 Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award winner told reporters at practice on Monday.
Shedeur added that he doesn’t want forced cheering from Coach Prime, plus he could do without the distraction of having his larger-than-life father around.
“I don’t want him to come and see me get a couple reps and then he’s cheering like a good dad. Like, nah, you can’t be proud of me right now, I got to get to where I’m going, and I know there’s a lot I’ve got to do to get there,” he remarked.
“I just want everything that I’m doing to be focused on this time, and I don’t want distractions. We know how everybody would take it, as taking away from the team, with my own dad showing up. It’s a gift and a curse at the same time.”
Browns offensive coordinator Tommy Rees claimed earlier in the offseasonthat Sanders will be given a chance to prove he can be the starter for the team next season, with all of the QBs on the roster to have their opportunity.
“You can see them all winning the job, I think, right?” Rees said. “And so in terms of the competition, we’re so early in the process. We’re so early in evaluating that.
He added:
“Yeah, I think, you know, we have a good group of guys that continue to push one another, and by the time September rolls around, we’ll be ready to go.”
The Browns will play the Carolina Panthers in a preseason fixture this Friday. Hopefully, Shedeur will be able to get out there and show how useful he could be in a professional competitive outing.
