Shedeur Sanders could be forcing Cleveland Browns’ hand in QB competition

The Cleveland Browns don’t have a starting quarterback, but their group of contestants is quite crowded after the addition of Shedeur Sanders in the 2025 NFL Draft. A big part of head coach Kevin Stefanski’s process is to pit the competition against one another in practices throughout the summer leading into the fall.

Yet, some quarterbacks may have the upper hand, such as Joe Flacco, especially considering he’s won a Super Bowl before, has 17 NFL seasons of experience, and has spent time operating coach Stefanski’s offense. Then, there’s former first-round pick Kenny Pickett, who could still have some untapped potential and possibly even the highest ceiling of the competitors in Cleveland’s QB room.

Or, the Browns could take a chance on potential with rookie third-round pick Dillon Gabriel or Sanders, the fifth-round rookie. Sanders, as the last one added to the roster, is the biggest longshot of all.

Yet, so far, so good for the 144th overall pick.

According to ESPN’s NFL insider Jeremy Fowler, Sanders has already made an “impression” early during his time with the Browns in practices.

While Sanders had a draft weekend like no other, all reports have been extremely positive since he joined the Browns’ organization. In other words, the Browns may have gotten a steal in the fifth round, but he still has a long road ahead just to earn a roster spot.
