In all likelihood, either Shedeur Sanders or Cam Ward will be the first quarterback selected in the 2025 NFL Draft. Which means that either Sanders or Ward could very well be the first player selected in the 2025 NFL Draft. And while both quarterbacks have been supportive of one another in the past, that doesn’t mean that they’re not competitors.
Sanders and Ward are currently training together under quarterback coach Darrell Colbert Jr. in Texas. Colbert Jr. runs Select QB Athletics and has worked with several big-name college quarterbacks as well an incoming Alabama five-star commit Keelon Russell. During a recent workout involving the two, they exchanged some barbs back and forth about which of the two future NFL stars is the better talent.
“They said generational talent,” Ward said in reference to Tennessee Titans President of Football Operations Chad Brinker’s recent comments about the No. 1 pick. “I’m going to prove them right.”
Sanders, meanwhile, wasn’t going to let that slide.
“I’m generational,” Sanders said. “So, I guess it’s article versus article.”
“I like that you think that,” Ward replied. “But we all know the truth.”
“What?” Sanders asked. “That Trav (Travis Hunter) gonna be first.”
Brinker stated that the team would not pass on a generational talent in order to necessarily draft a quarterback No. 1. That sparked discussion that Hunter or Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter could go before either Ward or Sanders.
Sanders, not giving up the fight, then claimed that while Ward may be generational, he is legendary.
“Generational is once every 100 years,” Ward shot back..
“You can be generational, but not legendary and won’t win any Super Bowls,” Sanders answered, before Ward said he’d win four or five Super Bowls then call it a career.
The two went back and forth for a while in what was spirited but seemingly good-natured banter. Ward is currently the betting favorite to go No. 1 overall. But he did seem to learn a good lesson in this exchange. Don’t get into a war of words with the Sanders family, because they will always win a war of attrition in that realm.
