When Shannon Sharpe was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2011, he could barely make it through his speech without breaking down in tears. Sharpe was overcome with emotion and gratitude toward his brother, Sterling Sharpe, who helped pave the way for him.
“My big brother, Sterling, I’m the only player of 267 men that’s walked through this building to my left that can honestly say this: I’m the only pro football player that’s in the Hall of Fame, and the second best player in my own family,” Shannon Sharpe said.
Now, 14 years later, Sterling Sharpe is also going into the Hall of Fame, but all the spotlight remains on Shannon.
While Sterling Sharpe is one of just four players set to enter the Pro Football Hall of Fame on Saturday, Shannon is still the one everybody is talking about.
That’s because the younger Sharpe brother was recently fired by ESPN after settling a $50 million lawsuit alleging sexual assault.
News of Sharpe’s departure from the company broke this week just before his brother’s induction ceremony, and for that, he sounds genuinely sorry.
“I’m sorry that I upstaged you in this manner,” Shannon said during a special edition of his “Nightcap” podcast. “That was never my intent. You’ve been my hero, my role model for as long as I can remember.”
Sharpe said he learned about news of his firing earlier in the week and was hoping it would not leak to the press until after the Hall of Fame ceremony.
“I’m sure everybody’s heard the news by now that I will not be returning to ESPN,” Shannon said. “I found out this information a little earlier in the week, and really, the only thing I asked was, ‘Guys, can we wait until Monday? My brother is going into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.’ I really wanted it to be about him and I want it to be about my family. I said, ‘This coming out will overshadow everything that he’s worked his entire life for.’ Unfortunately, it didn’t happen that way.”
Of course, Sharpe did not seem upset enough to not film a special edition of his show.
