The Seattle Seahawks made a lot of roster changes this offseason. None were bigger than trading Geno Smith and signing Sam Darnold to be their new starting quarterback. However, now more changes could come to Mike Macdonald’s lineup, after just one game.

Yet, after the Seahawks lost to their division rival, the San Francisco 49ers, after allowing 10 fourth-quarter points, it makes sense that the team is a bit flustered. Now coach Macdonald could respond by benching one of his Pro Bowl defenders.

When asked whether starting cornerback Riq Woolen would start this Sunday against the Pittsburgh Steelers, Macdonald replied, “We’ll see.”

That’s not exactly a ringing endorsement for a player who has started 47 of the 49 games he’s appeared in since arriving as a fifth-round pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.

It’s possible coach Macdonald simply wasn’t ready to make a decision this early. Yet, after Woolen allowed a 45-yard catch down the sideline to 49ers receiver Ricky Pearsall, then the game-winning touchdown to tight end Jake Tonges, it’s clear Woolen wasn’t at his best.

Devon Witherspoon will still be one of the Seahawks’ starting cornerbacks on Sunday, but it remains to be seen whether Woolen or Josh Jobe will be joining him. For now, Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers will have to prepare for the possibility of seeing both cornerbacks on Sunday. Considering Jobe still played 61 out of a possible 76 defensive snaps last Sunday, there’s a good chance Rodgers will see a heavy dose of both players.
