Field Gulls
The Seattle Seahawks announced a trio of new captains who will attempt to lead the team to their second straight road win against the Atlanta Falcons.
The captains for the Seahawks this week are running back Kenneth Walker III, cornerback Devon Witherspoon and linebacker Patrick O’Connell. It’s a bit surprising that this is Witherspoon’s first game earning the honor all season, but with the third-year lightning rod coming off one of his best games of the season against the Minnesota Vikings, it’s an earned honor.
The fifth-overall pick in 2023 has earned a Pro Bowl nod in both of his first two seasons, while delivering some of the best highlight plays from a Seahawks corner since the Legion of Boom era. Although he’s struggled with injuries in 2025, he’s continued to be a difference maker for the Seahawks, racking up a starter-esque number of tackles in just seven games.
The offensive representative, Walker, is fresh off another solid game against the Vikings. The Seahawks’ starting back has seen a slight reduction in his carries, splitting time with Zach Charbonnet, but he’s running at a career-best clip of 4.6 yards per carry. Walker scored two touchdowns last season against Atlanta.
Maybe this selection will be a show of good faith, and Walker will finally get some touches in the red zone. We’ll have to wait for Sunday to find out about that, though.
Rounding out the trio is O’Connell, the special teams representative, who’s been forced to step up due to linebacker injuries this season. He starred against the Tennessee Titans, bringing down Cam Ward for his first career sack and racking up nine tackles.
Last week, O’Connell continued to receive playing time, recording three tackles in the Seahawks’ shutout of the Vikings. The former Montana Grizzly has been with the Seahawks for the last three seasons, and this is his first time in his career that he’s been named a captain.
The Seahawks look to continue their dominance of the 10 a.m. timeslot against the Falcons on Sunday.
