Someone somewhere once said, “Life finds a way.” And it was head coach of the Los Angeles Rams Sean McVay tonight saying this his guys “found a way”, after his Rams narrowly defeated the Houston Texans by a final score of 14-9 to kickoff off their 2025 season.
After the game, McVay did his usual post-game press conference, and though he feels his team has a lot to learn, he was impressed with his squad’s ability to finish the game with a victory despite some mistakes and bumps along their way.
Said McVay after seeing his team get to 1-0:
“Our guys found a way, and that’s what it’s about. I think you learned a lot about this group today, you know, and there’s a mental toughness, there’s a resilience, and there’s an opportunity for us to learn a lot. I mean, there’s a ton of things that, you know when you talk about what do good teams do, and smart teams, that we can really from, but I’m damn grateful to be able to do it, you know, after getting the result we want.”
It’s the first game of the year, and some mistakes are to be expected, but truly if this teams want to compete at the highest levels, then the offense needs to improve upon today’s up and down performance. Matthew Stafford looked like a quarterback that missed a good chunk of training camp, but he also looked like a veteran at the NFL level on more than one throw. If Stafford can keep what he has with Puka Nacua, build upon his rapport with Davante Adams, then this offense could be very fun to watch.
In the meantime, what the team did show is that their defense might be a top unit in the league. They went after CJ Stroud, and they gave up some long plays, but overall, they kept Houston in check and the defense was perhaps the biggest reason that L.A. won today.
If the Rams can clean up some of their penalties, build upon their offensive performance and see the defense keep up their level of play, then this team might be one of the best in the NFC.
It’s easy to see why McVay is excited about the weeks to come.
