When the Buffalo Bills somewhat surprisingly fired Sean McDermott after seven consecutive playoff appearances, many assumed he’d quickly land on his feet as an NFL head coach elsewhere. After all, there were a total of 10 NFL head coaching vacancies this offseason.

Now, with just four NFL head coaching vacancies remaining, McDermott’s chances of landing one of them are getting slimmer by the day. Yet, there’s also a possibility that he doesn’t even want one of the few jobs that are left.

According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, McDermott is “likely” to take a year off from coaching football at this point.

Can we blame him? After all, it’s not like the Arizona Cardinals, Cleveland Browns, or Las Vegas Raiders are set to be playoff contenders next season. None of them even has an established starting quarterback, especially if Kyler Murray gets cut or traded this offseason.

Thus, instead of taking a job he isn’t too excited about, McDermott may feel like he’s better off waiting until next season when other opportunities will open up. No one expected the Baltimore Ravens or Pittsburgh Steelers jobs to become available this year, yet they did. There will surely be more surprises next season too.

Should McDermott sit this hiring cycle out, he’ll enter next year as the top candidate available after leading the Bills to a 98-50 record across nine seasons. Mike McCarthy sat out a season waiting for better opportunities, and he just landed his dream gig with his hometown team.
