Sean McDermott penned a classy letter to the Buffalo Bills and their fans after he was unexpectedly handed his pink slip on Monday.
This morning, the Bills stunned everyone by firing Sean McDermott after a successful nine-year tenure as their head coach. The move came less than 48 hours after their heartbreaking loss to the Denver Broncos in overtime of the Divisional Round.
Multiple Bills players questioned the decision on social media. Veteran defensive tackle Jordan Phillips said it was “so stupid.” Defensive lineman DaQuan Jones added that it didn’t “make sense.”
NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero shared a statement from Sean McDermott. The 51-year-old poured his heart out to the city, the football club and Bills Mafia, saying, “We Love You! We will miss Buffalo.”

McDermott went 98-50-0 in his nine seasons as Buffalo’s head coach, per Pro Football Reference. They reached the playoffs eight times, including each of the last seven years, and won five AFC East division titles.
The Bills are taking a calculated risk by firing McDermott. Yes, they kept falling short in the postseason. But how many other coaches would come close to annual Super Bowl contention with the type of rosters that GM Brandon Beane has built?
McDermott took an extremely flawed 2024 Bills team to the AFC Championship Game. He guided them to 12 wins. They were this-close to another AFC title game appearance, narrowly falling to the top-seeded Broncos.
He did this with only Josh Allen and James Cook as bonafide superstars. Beane has hardly added any difference-makers on defense. He has yet to find a suitable replacement for Stefon Diggs at wide receiver. And yet, Beane got the promotion on Monday. And McDermott got a pink slip.
It’s as if the same-old Buffalo Bills have resurfaced.
