Field Gulls
The Seattle Seahawks let go of veteran nose tackle Johnathan Hankins on Wednesday. Hankins had not played all season while on the non-football injury (NFI) list with a back issue and was confirmed by head coach Mike Macdonald as not coming back this season.
As part of Hankins’ departure, the 12-year veteran received an injury settlement. Since we’re past the trade deadline, any player who is let go is subject to waivers. Obviously if Hankins isn’t going to be ready to play this year, it’s more than likely he’ll go unclaimed and be an unrestricted free agent.
Hankins signed with the Seahawks as a free agent in 2024, playing in all 17 regular season games but with largely waning snap counts as the season progressed. He nevertheless was brought back in 2025 as nose tackle depth, only to start training camp on the NFI list and never come off it.
While he was a solid contributor for the Seahawks when healthy, Hankins’ presence on the field hasn’t necessarily been missed given the promising performances by Brandon Pili. Byron Murphy II has also been outstanding in his second season while taking on a larger share of snaps.
There’s nothing really else to glean from this other than some housekeeping regarding the roster.
