Happy 50th season, Seattle Seahawks!
The 2025 NFL season is here, and the Seahawks have expectations of returning to the playoffs after narrowly missing out over the past two seasons. Their first game under new quarterback Sam Darnold is against one of his former teams, the San Francisco 49ers. Darnold was Brock Purdy’s backup in the 2023 season, then defeated the 49ers as Minnesota Vikings starter in 2024, and now Sam looks to take his Vikings success with him to Seattle.
Meanwhile, the 49ers come into this season off the back of an injury-filled, 6-11 last-place finish in the NFC West. They nearly won the Super Bowl two seasons ago and ended up as another victim of the so-called “Super Bowl loss hangover.” The Seahawks may have been heavily advertised as having a lot of changes on offense, but the same applies to the 49ers on defense. Several key starters like Dre Greenlaw, Charvarius Ward, and Talanoa Hufanga are gone, and the Niners went all-out drafting defense early this past April.
For the Seahawks, it’s a chance at a first Lumen Field win over the Niners since 2021, and a second win in a row after getting swept in 2022 and 2023. If the new-look Seahawks want to make a positive Week 1 statement, it’s beat the Niners again and successfully establish superiority in the trenches on both sides of the ball.
