The Seattle Seahawks began Thursday’s practice with what is a classic practice squad and active roster switcheroo.
With cornerback Devon Witherspoon’s status uncertain after not practicing on Wednesday, the Seahawks signed Shaquill Griffin from the practice squad. Griffin made the initial 53-man roster before being released and eventually signed to the practice squad.
Wide receiver Cody White, who made the initial 53-man roster for the first time in his six-year career, has been released. However, don’t despair regarding White not being on the team. As a vested veteran, he does not need to pass through waivers before he can be re-signed, so he’s already on the practice squad and just takes Griffin’s spot.
There’s really nothing more to this. If there’s concern about Witherspoon’s knee following his late-game collision with Coby Bryant, it only makes sense to have a veteran corner with starting experience be on the roster without wasting a game day practice squad elevation.
But in case you need a reminder, here’s the current Seahawks practice squad.
