Field Gulls
The Seattle Seahawks made one 53-man roster move on Monday, bringing special teams standout and reserve safety D’Anthony Bell up from the practice squad. Cornerback Tyler Hall took Bell’s spot on the practice squad, having been let go last week.
Seattle has an open spot this weekend due to the upheld one-game suspension of Derick Hall, who’s eligible to return to the active roster after Week 17’s game against the Carolina Panthers. Another likely factor in Bell’s elevation is Coby Bryant’s knee injury, which will likely resulted in missed games.
Bell has played only 90 defensive snaps on the season, but he’s logged 238 special teams snaps while bouncing back-and-forth between the practice squad and active roster. He recorded the first (half-)sack of his career in Seattle’s loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, but his biggest highlight with the Seahawks was a blocked punt against the New Orleans Saints.
There’s not really any deeper insight into this signing outside of the Seahawks needing both safety depth and someone to take Hall’s roster spot for a week. It’s definitely worth a side note that running back George Holani, wide receiver Tory Horton, and linebacker Chazz Surratt are all eligible to return from injured reserve, but only one of them can be activated over the rest of the regular season due to Seattle using seven of its eight allotted IR-designate for return slots.
