The Seattle Seahawks have released former Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback turned wide receiver John Rhys Plumlee from injured reserve.

Plumlee, who was with the Steelers in training camp as their fourth quarterback, has been on the Seattle Seahawks practice squad since the Steelers released him at the end of August last year. In their announcement promoting him to the active roster, the Seahawks listed Plumlee as a wide receiver.

The Seahawks signed Plumlee to a reserve/futures contract in January.

A two-sport athlete at Ole Miss, Plumlee played center field and quarterback for the Rebels before moving to wide receiver. He then transferred to UCF to play quarterback again, and he started two seasons for the Knights.

The Steelers signed Plumlee as an undrafted free agent this spring, promising him a chance to work as a quarterback, but the Steelers also found ways to utilize Plumlee’s athleticism

In addition to his quarterback play, Plumlee also worked at wide receiver, kick returner, punt returner, and covered kickoffs and punts. In the preseason, he led the team with six kickoff returns for 145 yards. He also returned two punts for 16 yards and one special teams tackle.

He was the team’s primary kickoff returned in preseason while Cordarrelle Patterson was injured, averaging 24.2 yards per return on six returns. He also returned two punts in addition to playing quarterback. He threw four passes, completing three and ran one time for four yards.
