Do you remember the 2012 preseason? It was fun.
Like, really fun*.*
In case you need a little reminder why…
And no, I don’t mean the fact that Braylon Edwards, Kellen Winslow Jr. and Terrell Owens were on the team…though that certainly didn’t hurt!
The Seattle Seahawks had a young, developmental QB in Russell Wilson. Granted, he developed much faster than anyone could have realistically hoped and won the starting job out of training camp.
Fast forward to 2025, double that #3 jersey, and you’ve got rookie QB Jalen Milroe wearing #6 for the Seahawks. He’s an even better athlete than Russ, but still has a ways to go to be a polished passer like Wilson was coming out of college.
No problem, that’s what the preseason is for.
You can bet that Milroe is going to get the lion’s share of the reps – Seattle already knows what it has in Drew Lock and doesn’t need to put Sam Darnold at risk. Milroe has the chance to be all over the highlights in the preseason as he’ll likely be facing players that will be on the back end of opposing rosters or out looking for other opportunities. He touches the ball on every play and is an incredible athlete with big-time college football experience. This will be a far cry from enduring Paxton Lynch (no offense) trying to move the ball down the field. There’s no pressure on Milroe besides just continuing to progress. He can cut it loose and run wild…prepare for the hype train.
I can’t wait to see that in a Seahawks uniform!
A true, young developmental QB wasn’t the only exciting facet of the 2012 preseason. That team had been stockpiling young talent over the previous few years and were hungry to prove themselves. The closest game they played was the preseason opener where they beat the Tennessee Titans by 10 points. Over the four preseason games, they outscored opponents 122-44. Seattle’s depth was so much better than their opponents.
It looks like Seattle is in a similar position in 2025 after some solid drafting by John Schneider. The team is once again building up a talented, young roster, recently being named the second-best team in terms of under 25 talent in the NFL. Many of those young stars like Devon Witherspoon, Byron Murphy, and Jaxon Smith-Njigba likely won’t see much playing time, but that leaves more snaps for the reserves who are either trying to find their place or earn bigger roles.
Veterans like Mike Morris, Jerrick Reed, and Dareke Young will be trying like heck to secure a spot on the roster. They’re nearing the end of their rookie contracts and club control will be a factor when considering who should fill the final few spots on the 53-man roster.
Others such as Tory Horton and Nick Emmanwori – while not at risk of being released – are out to show that they should be a much bigger part of the gameplan than...
