John Schneider’s contract extension runs through 2031…clearly, Seahawks management is on board with the team’s direction.
You ready for six more years of 90s comedy movie quotes? Cuz John Schneider is now under contract through 2031, brother!
In case it wasn’t obvious already, the Seattle Seahawks brass believes that Schneider is building a championship-caliber team once again. Look no further than the article in the tweet above.
“The extension of General Manager John Schneider’s contract is a testament to his 15-plus years of football leadership and success,” said Jody Allen, chair of the Seattle Seahawks. “I am confident that John will continue to deliver real results and a continued strong partnership with head coach Mike Macdonald that is already contributing to our winning culture on and off the field.”
Assuming things go according to plan, Schneider will hit two decades as the GM of the Seahawks. In an industry where most teams churn through front office personnel like they’re going out of style, Schneider’s longevity is impressive. His teams have been remarkably consistent, suffering few losing seasons.
They also haven’t had a deep playoff run recently, either. The last time they were really in contention was probably 2019-2020 when the team went 23-9 in the regular season, but were derailed by injuries heading into the playoffs (2019) or just outright laid an egg in the postseason (2020).
Still, I’m a fan of this move and it’s not just because John Schneider is a fellow Wisconsinite who grew up about 45 minutes away from my house. His consistency should not be confused with complacency. Schneider has never been afraid to explore every possible avenue to build his roster. He’s both traded for and traded away star players. He’s bucked supposed draft philosophies - see CB Devon Witherspoon in the top five and LG Grey Zabel in the first round.
When you think you’ve got JS figured out, he swerves. Hiring Mike Macdonald looks like a home run so far, and this extension for Schneider keeps the band together for the foreseeable future. I’m excited about the young talent on this team both in terms of the roster and the coaching/scouting staff, and am looking forward to seeing this team back on top.
Congratulations, John Schneider! Have a beer for me, brother.
