Field Gulls
The Seattle Seahawks were left short-handed at wide receiver after two early exits in their 27-10 win over the Carolina Panthers.
Cody White was the first of the contributors to go down, suffering a groin injury while nearly blocking a punt early in the first quarter. After the game, Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald provided a minor and speculative update on White’s condition.
“We’ll see. It’s probably going to be some time with Cody,” Macdonald said.
Macdonald was similarly tight-lipped when it came to the condition of receiver and special teams ace Rashid Shaheed, who entered concussion protocol after a hit out of bounds by Mike Jackson in the first quarter. He was later ruled out early in the third quarter. The Seahawks’ head man confirmed Shaheed suffered a concussion, but he did not provide a timeline for his return.
Gregg Bell, reporter for The News Tribune, reported that Shaheed is in concussion protocol and his status for next week’s monumental matchup with the San Francisco 49ers was “in doubt.”
Both players have stepped up in the receiving game in 2025, especially Shaheed, who was beginning to form a connection with Sam Darnold. With Tory Horton still injured, only Jake Bobo and Dareke Young were left behind Jaxon Smith-Njiba and Cooper Kupp in Carolina on Sunday, a troubling sight for a slumping offense.
The Seahawks have two rookie wide receivers on their practice squad as of Sunday: Ricky White III, out of UNLV, and Courtney Jackson from Arkansas State.
White and Shaheed are key pieces for Seattle’s special teams unit, handling kick and punt return duties. In their place, running back Cam Akers and Young stepped in to return a kick, but it’s unclear who will handle punt returning duty. Bobo was the Seahawks’ primary punt returner during the preseason, and it’s possible he’ll re-assume the role if Shaheed has to miss time.
