Seahawks fan discussion: Playoff implications for Seattle in Panthers vs. Buccaneers
Field Gulls Field Gulls

The undercard to the Seattle Seahawks vs. San Francisco 49ers NFC West title and number one seed showdown if the NFC South title game between the Carolina Panthers and Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Sort of.

A total freak set of circumstances in recent weeks has completely ripped away the “win and in” scenario for the Buccaneers. The Atlanta Falcons’ three-game winning streak has put them at 7-9 alongside the Bucs, while the Panthers sit pretty at 8-8. If the Panthers win or tie in Tampa then Carolina is the NFC South champion, plain and simple. If the Buccaneers win, their fate rests in the hands of the New Orleans Saints, who must beat or tie the Falcons in Atlanta on Sunday for Tampa to claim the NFC South crown. A Falcons win would create a three-way tie at 8-9, in which case the Panthers would win the division and the Bucs would miss out.

Could the NFC South winner face the Seahawks?

There are possible implications for the Seahawks in this game. If the Seahawks lose to the 49ers, then they will play the NFC South champion in the wild card round.

It’s also possible that Seattle could even host the NFC South winner in the Divisional Round if all of the home teams win next weekend. Seattle defeated Carolina last week and held Bryce Young to 40 net yards passing, while the Bucs beat the Seahawks way back in October when Baker Mayfield looked way more functional than he does now. Tampa Bay was once 6-2 and now they’re facing an all-time late season collapse out of the playoffs.
