Seahawks’ Derick Hall Opted Not To Bet On Big Contract Year

At the start of June, the Seahawks made a move to secure pass rusher Derick Hall through the 2029 season. With the final year of his rookie contract remaining, Hall could’ve taken a chance on earning big money for himself with a strong 2026 campaign, but according to Bob Condotta of The Seattle Times, he wanted to ensure his spot in a “really special place.”

Hall’s tenure in Seattle has been an up-and-down affair. As a rookie, Hall held a decent role in the Seahawks’ edge rusher rotation but didn’t find much success. In Year 2, Hall secured a starting role and started to deliver on his second-round draft stock, finishing second on the team in both sacks (8.0) and quarterback hits (20). Last year, Uchenna Nwosu and DeMarcus Lawrence pushed Hall and Boye Mafe from their starting roles, limiting Hall’s production to just three sacks and 13 quarterback hits.

Hall’s elevation into a starting role in his second season came after Seattle traded Darrell Taylor to the Bears. The next year, the Seahawks saw Dre’Mont Jones depart in free agency, and after the Super Bowl, the team saw Mafe depart for a three-year, $60MM deal in Cincinnati. With Hall on the final year of his deal, there’s a decent chance he could’ve continued the trend of departing pass rushers.

If Hall had thought to take a chance on himself, his chances of bouncing back with a season similar to his eight-sack 2024 campaign were certainly increased due to Mafe’s exit. With a bigger role in 2026 and a strong contract year, Hall could’ve followed in Mafe’s footsteps in an attempt to win his own $20MM per year deal. Instead, when the Seahawks offered to tack on a three-year, $42MM extension at the end of his rookie contract, Hall accepted the security of a deal he didn’t have to bounce back to earn and, with it, the opportunity to remain with the team that gave him a Super Bowl ring.

The deal served to benefit the Seahawks, as well. After watching free agency deliver their pass rushers elsewhere over the past couple years, Seattle opted to get in front of things and secure Hall for the future.
