Seahawks announce Week 3 game captains vs. Saints

Last year , Seattle Seahawks head coach Mike Macdonald introduced the weekly captain system. This was a departure from the season -ong captains under Pete Carroll. So far, Sam Darnold, Brady Russell, Leonard Williams, Zach Charbonnet, Charles Cross, Julian Love, and AJ Barner have all been named game captains. This week, three new players and one repeat player have been given the captain honors.

This week, wide receiver Cooper Kupp, quarterback Sam Darnold, linebackerErnest Jones IV, and linebacker, Drake Thomas have all been named as captains for Week 3 against the New Orleans Saints.

After having a slow start to the season in week one, Kupp had a big day through the air in Week 2, snagging seven receptions for 90 yards on nine targets. He will look to have similar success this next week against a young, unproven Saints secondary. For Kupp to have repeat success, it will rely heavily on Darnold having another solid day at the office. The now two-time game captain has had a solid start to his 2025 campaign; Darnold notably has a top-ten release time in the league, averaging 2.66 seconds before throwing the ball. This is a significant improvement for Darnold, who ranked 34th in the league last year.

Jones IV is having a fantastic start to the season as well, already notching 18 tackles, one stuff, two pass defenses, and an interception on the young season. Meanwhile backup linebacker, Thomas has seen more snaps on defense this season with Tyrice Knight slowly making his way back from preseason knee injury. Thomas has already played 22 snaps on defense through two games, compared to 37 snaps through all of the 2024 season.
