Klint Kubiak wanted a fullback, and he’s getting one in Robbie Ouzts. What will his role be as a rookie?
The Seattle Seahawks drafted a fullback! This is not a drill!
After going years without a true fullback on the roster, Seattle finally is getting back on that train asvnew offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak utilizes the position. To fill that need, the Seahawks selected Robbie Ouzts out of Alabama at pick No. 175. The former college tight end was already more established as a blocker than a receiver in college so the transition to fullback will hopefully be a smooth one.
Mockdraftable and the first RAS chart above are based on Ouzts as a TE, which was his position in college. Obviously, we know he’s going to be a FB for the Seahawks so the second RAS chart and accompanying comps are more relevant. Overall, Ouzts is an “okay” athlete as a FB with great size and explosion. As long as he can block, who really cares?
The first two names on the RAS comps are interesting. Up first is Pat Ricard, whom Mike Macdonald will be very familiar with during his time with the Baltimore Ravens.
Ricard is heavier and stronger while Ouzts is faster, more explosive, and performed better in the agility drills. At 274lbs, it’s not like Ouzts is “small” either.
Up next is Seahawks Legend Will Tukuafu.
Ouzts is actually a little bigger than Tukuafu, a converted DL. The rest of the scores are pretty close with Ouzts performing slightly better in most categories.
This is a big man, who will hopefully be opening up big holes for the running backs!
I’m one of those people who thinks that old school football with a fullback is fun, so I was all for drafting Ouzts.
Then I saw a picture of him.
Yup, that’s a fullback alright!
All kidding aside, Ouzts is very athletic for being such a big man.
I’m not going to get into a science lesson here, but Ouzts being as heavy as he is means that he’s going to generate a lot of force as a blocker when he gets moving.
He could also be a sneaky option as a pass catcher as shown in his time at Alabama playing TE.
Gotta love a big man TD!
Ouzts will have some competition at the FB position since Brady Russell moved there this offseason as well. Still, if you draft a FB, you expect them to make the roster. Ouzts will be a special teams mainstay and will get a handful of snaps in the backfield per game plowing the way for Seattle’s RBs. Just for fun I’ll guess that Ouzts will catch five passes this season with a TD.
He’ll relish in doing the dirty work and will likely become a fan favorite with his personality and ‘stache. He’s already got a fan...
