ESPN insider Adam Schefter reports the Pittsburgh Steelers are not expected to acquire Miami Dolphins Pro Bowl tight end Jonnu Smith.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have had discussions with the Miami Dolphins about a potential trade for Pro Bowl tight end Jonnu Smith. But ESPN insider Adam Schefter revealed that is very unlikely to happen.
“Pittsburgh has been seeking additional receiving help and has inquired about, but is not expected to trade for, Miami TE Jonnu Smith,” Schefter wrote on X.
Acquiring Smith would have been a bit of a head-scratching move for the Steelers, who just made Pat Freiermuth one of the highest-paid tight ends in the league last offseason with a four-year, $48.4 million contract extension. They also have tight ends Darnell Washington, Donald Parham Jr. and Connor Heyward on the roster.
However, Pittsburgh still needs to add another playmaker to its offense after trading George Pickens to the Dallas Cowboys last month.
That could come in the form of wide receiver Gabe Davis, who is taking a free-agent visit with the Steelers later this week.
Adding another wide receiver always made more sense for Pittsburgh. It’s wide receiver room is quite underwhelming past DK Metcalf with the likes of Robert Woods, Calvin Austin III, Roman Wilson, Scotty Miller, Ben Skowronek, Brandon Johnson, Lance McCutcheon and Roc Taylor.
Smith’s agent has also since revealed that his client’s first choice would be to stay in Miami on a reworked deal. With Pittsburgh now out of the discussion, that seems even more likely to happen.
Smith, 29, is coming off the best season of his eight-year NFL career. In 2024, he recorded a career-high 88 catches for 884 yards and eight touchdowns.
